Update One

Nuzlocke Sapphire: Update One:

HERE BE SPOILERS! YE BE WARNED!

Okay!  This is my fourth Nuzlocke attempt.  Here's hoping I can get through it this time.

Just a refresher, here are the rules I'm going by:
  • Can only use the first encountered Pokemon in an area
    • If I don't catch it, I get nothing for that area
  • If DexNav shows a Pokemon before I encounter any in an area, I must catch that Pokemon
    • If I scare it away, too bad!!  No Pokemon for me!!
  • If a Pokemon loses all its health, consider it dead
  • Must give nicknames to all Pokemon
I'm not releasing dead Pokemon into the wild, and I'm catching more Pokemon than I'm allowed (but I won't be using them).  I know those rules are part of the fun but I want to go for filling out the National Dex, and I don't want to have to go back and grind out a couple hundred Pokemon captures.

Out the gate I've already made some mistakes.  I was so taken aback by DexNav that I completely forgot to catch anything on Routes 102 and 103 (I killed my opponents).  So by Route 104 I was hurting with just Phoenix and Rocket.  I picked up Beachy, though, so I was glad to have a Water/Flying as opposed to a Bug from that area.

I decided to use DexNav to my leveling advantage and started grinding out Pokemon that provided higher EXP or were good matchups for my team.  I came across a Level 12 wild Surskit using DexNav in an area that had Level 3s and 5s, so I decided to go for it.

What a terrible idea.  Surskit used Psybeam and drained Rocket's health to under half.  I knew I couldn't win, and I also knew that I couldn't tread water using Potions because I'd still get hit back to less than half health after popping one.  And if the Surskit was able to get a critical hit, I'd be dead anyway, and I'd have to put another Pokemon in danger.

So I tried to run, but I couldn't run away.  I watched helplessly as Rocket's life faded in front of my eyes.  And I wasn't even to the first gym yet!  I sent out Beachy (no way was I putting Phoenix's life in danger) and he couldn't run either.  His health went down to critical levels, but fortunately I was able to run on the third attempt.

RIP Rocket :(

Ok.  Time to regroup.  I have a Fire type that will eventually also have Fighting, and I have a Water/Flying type.  Next up is Petalburg Woods.  Maybe I can get a Grass type?  I'd even take a Bug type.  Anything but a...

DexNav lights up, showing a Slakoth.  Normal type.  Ugh.  And to make matters worse, Slakoth's ability prevents him from attacking every other turn.  Womp.

Anyway, I survived my first Team Aqua battle and claimed the EXP Share.  Let's see how things go.
